About the volunteering opportunity

The FUN is committed to the preservation and promotion of biodiversity. Landscape-defining hedges play an important role in connecting habitats. In Hondelage, a new hedge was planted around a cattle pasture a few years ago. To protect it from game browsing, a game protection fence was installed. Now that the shrubs and trees have become established, the fence must be dismantled so that animals such as deer and hares have free access again. Many hands are needed to dismantle the partially overgrown fence.

In a second project area, ponds are to be cleared of surrounding trees so that they are not so heavily shaded. Trees have already been felled for this purpose and now need to be removed. This will create space for rare amphibians and aquatic plants.

Your Tasks

We meet at 09:00 and start with an introduction to the work of our association. Then we will go to the depot together and drive to the work site (1 km) until noon. There we dismantle the pasture fence in the morning. To do this, the old wire is pinched off with pliers, pulled out and rolled up.

After a lunch break together at the nature experience center, we can visit the water buffalo or Scottish Highland cattle nearby if we wish.

In the afternoon, we clear the pond area of tree trunks about one meter long by 3 p.m. to create light for nature.

With the support of a dedicated team, this work is easy to do and you can see what you have achieved.

Important notice

Carpools should be formed, as we are working in the protected landscape area and want to disturb as little as possible.

If you are interested, you should download the free i-Naturalist app https://www.inaturalist.org/ onto your cell phone. The website is currently unavailable due to scheduled maintenance work, but should be back online within the next few days.
We would like to carry out a 15-minute BioBlitz in both project areas:
A BioBlitz is a citizen science project in which participants record the biodiversity of a region via smartphone app within a fixed period of time. The data collected in this way is analyzed with the help of experts or artificial intelligence and used for scientific nature conservation work.
