About the volunteering opportunity

In our project, we are working together to preserve the Great Moor near Gifhorn. In order to preserve the open landscape and secure the habitat for typical moorland species, it is important to carefully clear the areas of emerging tree growth.

The NABU district association has been committed to the maintenance and development of this unique ecosystem for over forty years. There is a lot to do in a moor with a history of more than two hundred years of peat extraction - but with the support of dedicated volunteers, great things can be achieved.

Your Tasks

Our main task is to preserve the protected heathland in the Great Moor. To do this, we carefully clear the open land areas of growing trees such as birch and pine. At the same time, we provide exciting insights into different areas of the moor to make it possible to experience the special features of this unique ecosystem. In this way, we combine active nature conservation with valuable insights into the moorland landscape.

What's needed

For this volunteering opportunity, intermediate German skills are required.
No previous knowledge is necessary.

What to bring

Please remember to wear clothing suitable for the weather, gloves and sturdy shoes. Don't forget rain trousers or leg warmers, and possibly spare trousers for afterwards - as long as we're moving, it won't be cold even if it's wet.

We provide the necessary tools.

After the work is done, we'll end the day with a lunch break together and talk about our experiences. There will be sandwiches, cake, coffee and drinks. If you have an allergy or intolerance, please bring something of your own or let us know in good time.
